| Peat energy plant to be built in Uganda |
MISA, through its daughter company Kabale Energy Ltd., has undertaken to erect 30MW peat-fired power plant near the city of Kabale in South-Western Uganda.
Peat is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation in wetlands which are found in the region and is classified by the Government of Uganda as a renewable resource. A study on renewable energy development and efficiency revealed that peat resources in Uganda could generate about 800MW.
Nilesh Kanabar, the Kabale Energy company secretary, said the project, which would be implemented at Kiruruma swamp, "would provide reliable power and reduce transmission losses due to the current distance between Kabale and the nearest power station.
“Power generated will be connected to the national grid and sold to the transmission company,” Kanabar also said.
The firm has applied to the Electricity Regulatory Authority for a licence to generate and sell power. Once completed, rural areas in western Uganda will access more electricity. Kanabar said Kabale local authorities have been very positive over the project and had identified 300 hectares of land for industrial use. They will also assist the firm purchase 50-75 hectares for peat harvesting. |
