Sugar

The very roots of the Madhvani family stem from the sugar industry.  Founded in 1930, the family plantation at Kakira, Uganda, has been at the forefront of East Africa's industrial sector, employing and supporting well over 20,000 people within its bounds.

The family's sugar mill was nationalised in 1971 under the regime of Idi Amin and subsequently fell into decline until 1980 when production ceased altogether.  However, at the initative of MISA's president Nitin Madhvani, MISA was invited to return to Uganda and worked with the government to rehabilitate and re-open the Madhvani assets, including the Kakira estate.  Today, Kakira co-generates 6 mega watts of electricity and produces 90,000 tonnes of sugar per annum.  This is set to expand to 160,000 tonnes, producing 22 mega watts of electricity to supply the national grid.

The Madhvani Group also owns and operates sugar mills in Rwanda and Angola.
